Atheist perspective: Becoming atheist does not mean you have to change everything about you

There have been a number of times where atheists have told me I sound like a “Christian.” I tend to get this response when I speak harshly of communism, criticize the public education system and explain why I think Americans should have access to firearms.

What is amusing to me about being told I sound like a Christian is realizing that not much has changed about me since I decided to be atheist over a decade ago when I was 18 years old. Before then I was, in my own terms, a “secular” Christian. Sure, I became a bit more open minded in regards to people’s personal lifestyles after I became atheist, but my core personality, principles and interests did not change much.

When I hear atheists tell me I sound like a Christian, I wonder do atheists feel they need to drastically change who they are in order to “qualify” as atheist? Perhaps if I suddenly started speaking down on the “1%” and promoting free education I would then sound like an atheist to them?

Needless to say, becoming atheist does not mean you have to suddenly change everything about you, whether it’s your personality, appearance, or views on certain issues. You can still be who you are, and embrace the traditions and heritage you grew up with.
