Swedish feminist political group proposes sexist community logo

Swedish political group Feministisk Initiativ in Kiruna, Sweden proposed in March 2018 to replace the community’s existing logo with a sexist logo featuring the colors pink and white and includes a female symbol.

On April 1, 2018 the feminist group posted on Facebook (translated)..

NEW COMMUNITY TO NEW KIRUNA! Feminist initiative Kiruna is presenting a motion to the City Council that, in the context of the city move and the expansion of the city’s business community, an update of the municipality’s weapon (municipality logo) should be made. “We have lived in a man-dominated mining culture for over a hundred years. Would not it be lovely if we could get a new weapon to demotivate the mine and focus new values like the equality of the new Kiruna, “said Malin Järvinen, newly appointed chairman of the Feminist Initiative Kiruna. The Chairman adds that the proposal is not to be regarded as a radical-feminist position because it is produced after the recommendation of the state heraldist and thus lacks the trans symbol.

The existing logo for Kiruna is a blue and white shield featuring a grouse, a common bird found in the region, and a symbol representing iron, associated with an iron ore mine in the area. It appears the feminist group is either unaware that the symbol represents iron or refuses to acknowledge its meaning.

While this may be a complete joke, it is irritating that this feminist group disrespects the community’s history by crossing out the existing logo and explains the community as having “man-dominated culture.” The primary reason why Kiruna is on the map is because of an iron ore mine that has been in operation for over 100 years. Were it not for this mine, there would be no reason for most of the population of Kiruna to be there. The only people who would be there are natives and probably a handful of tourist business employees and scientists studying at the space station.

At this point in time, it appears the proposed logo has not impressed locals. Additionally, thankfully, Feministisk Initiativ has lost its edge nationally and no longer qualifies as a serious political party in Sweden.
